What Your NY Driving Record Will Contain

Your New York DMV Driving Record is a reflection of your personal driving history. It will include all traffic violations, points added to your record, and accidents, restrictions, suspensions you have had.

Please review your New York State Driving Record for the following information:

  • The DMV removes a conviction or an accident from a driver record on January 1 of the fourth year after the year of the conviction or the accident. For example, if an accident occurred during 2009, that accident report will remain on your New York driver record until January 1, 2013.
  • If you have a conviction that is alcohol-related or drug-related, that conviction will remain on your driver record for exactly 10 years.
  • In addition, other convictions and accidents of a serious type can remain on a driver record for more than 10 years.
  • If your drivers license has been suspended or revoked and was not cleared or not terminated
  • If your drivers license has been suspended or revoked and it WAS cleared or termination, that suspension or revocation will remain on your driver record for four years from the date the suspension or revocation was terminated. (Note: The DMV uses the year when the suspension or the revocation was cleared or terminated, not the year when the suspension or the revocation began.)
Your NY Driving Record Will Contain The Following:
  • Your name, date of birth, and the mailing address State of New York has on file
  • Your driver license class, as well as any restriction or endorsements
  • Your current license status and expiration date
  • License suspensions, revocations, accidents*, and/or traffic violations with convictions.

* As per the New York DMV: "an accident on the records of every driver in the accident. An accident that appears on a driver record does not assign the fault to that driver. The DMV does not determine the fault in an accident."

And If You See A Mistake On Your New York Drivers Record...

... you will need to contact the New York Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DMV). As it is a legal matter, only a representative at the DMV can help you clear up any question or concern you might have.
